How I became a “Benedict baby”

Then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger played a major role in my conversion to Catholicism. I watched EWTN’s nonstop coverage of Pope John Paul II’s funeral that included the homily given by Cardinal Ratzinger. I’d never heard the man or read any of his work. When he finished, I remember thinking Wow! In that moment I knew I would join the Catholic church. You can’t imagine how happy I was to see him greet the people in Rome as the new pope. I am a true Benedict baby.

It took a couple more years and nine months of RCIA but I became a Catholic in 2010.  Pope Benedict XVI remained a constant influence as I continued my walk to Rome. For all those reasons and more, that is why I’ve chosen to make the work of Benedict XVI a major reading project. It is only fitting that I begin my walk with Benedict XVI during the Year of Faith.

How Benedict XVI inspired my Catholic spiritual reading plan

Pope Benedict XVI on election 2005

Benedict XVI

Joseph Ratzinger was born and spent his childhood in Germany. I spent my early childhood in Germany, too. There any similarities end. He went on to become a priest in the Catholic Church and rose to the rank of Cardinal before being elected Pope in 2005 after Pope John Paul II’s death.

From that point on, as I said, he became a strong influence over my conversion. I loved that he had such a heart for books as a reader and as a writer. The way he spoke of a combined faith and reason inspired me. I began to gather books by Benedict XVI.

Pope’s resignation spurs reading plan

I had already put my Benedict reading plan in motion when he announced his resignation in February 2013. My interest has only increased: I’ve started this blog, begun a lifelong Catholic reading plan, and created this project.

Complete list of books by Benedict XVI

The rather loose goal is to read 50 of his books within 5 years. I will write reviews as part of my blogging and link up the reviews here, too.

This is a chronological list although I don’t plan to read the works in order. The highlighted books are already in my library. I will review the finished books and provide a link here.
